Frosty
Pearl® Euonymus … an outstanding new
cultivar that exhibits all the best features of variegated Euonymus
in one plant. It was selected as a sport of Euonymus Vegetus by
Roy Duncan of Battle Creek, Michigan. This bloodline has produced
many great attributes such as increased winter hardiness and the
ability to excel in deep shade. The most attractive feature of this
plant is the large oval leaves with a deep forest green center surrounded
by a wide whitish cream irregular margin that gives the plant its
frosted appearance. The foliage has a thick leathery texture with
a satiny luster. It exhibits the deepest green centers and whitest
margins when grown in a shady location. The plant will also produce
a fruit set that provides unique seasonal interest. Once the fruit
begins to form, it produces 1/3" diameter pearl-like sized
fruit with a frosted outer coating. As the fruit ages, it changes
to a pinkish red and then finally opens to reveal an orange seed.
The seeds persist from the late fall into winter.
Frosty Pearl will grow to about 50 - 60" tall and 24" wide
as a climbing vine. It can also be used in the shrub border
as a mounding evergreen shrub. The plant performs best in partial
shade (morning sun, afternoon shade) to deeply shaded areas.
It also performs well in more northern areas where other variegated
Euonymus do not.
